DESCRIPTION OF THE MASTER MENU SCREEN - RELEASE 2.11 PAGE 1 OF 9
All of the main Portfolio Analyzer functions are available from the Master Menu
screen. To invoke one of the functions, just press the letter key that corres-
ponds to that function. It doesn't matter whether uppercase or lowercase
letters are used. Some functions (A,B,G,I,M) have their own menus and their own
Help screens for more information once they are invoked.
Many of the available functions work on the active portfolios. The name of the
active portfolio for update appears inside a reverse video block near the right
center part of the screen. The names of the active portfolio(s) for reports are
in another block below that. The portfolios for reports can be diffenent from
the portfolio for update. A portfolio is identified by a name up to 8 charac-
ters long, which you make up yourself (such as PERSONAL, TRUSTFUN, MOTHER,
etc.). There can be as many portfolios as will fit on a diskette or in a sub-
directory. A portfolio is made active by invoking the C (Change portfolio)
function and entering the name of the portfolio(s) you want to work with.
Some sample files are provided with the Portfolio Analyzer so you can experi-
ment with them to see what the program does. But it is highly recommended that
you start with a newly formatted data diskette (or a new sub-directory) and
create a new set of portfolios for your own use.
DESCRIPTION OF THE MASTER MENU SCREEN PAGE 2 OF 9
Following are descriptions of each of the Master Menu functions:
A = Add/delete securities. This function takes you to the Add/Delete Securities
screen, from which you can also delete security entries from the catalog,
make corrections and update current market values.
A security must exist in the catalog before it can be bought in any port-
folio. Once a security has been added to the catalog, it can be bought any
number of times in any portfolio. Only one catalog can exist on a data
diskette or in a sub-directory. However, you can have any number of separ-
ate data disks or sub-directories.
This function works on the catalog file CATALOG.POR, which is a list of
all securities that can be bought and sold. You can optionally use the file
supplied with the program for demonstration purposes. If you are starting
a new set of portfolios on a newly formatted data diskette (or in a new
sub-directory) where CATALOG.POR doesn't exist, you will be asked "Are you
starting a new data disk (Y=Yes, N=No)?". Reply Y (for Yes). If you press
N or Esc, you will be prompted to insert the correct data disk. Pressing
Esc again will get the Master Menu back.
DESCRIPTION OF THE MASTER MENU SCREEN PAGE 3 OF 9
A = Add a new security (continued). Next, the program will ask what is the max-
imum number of entries you want. Just press Enter for the default maximum
value, which is 255. If you are operating from floppy disks and you are
short of disk space, enter a smaller number. WARNING: Once entered, this
number cannot be changed later on!
The catalog file requires 128 bytes per security, plus one extra entry.
The maximum size catalog file will require 32,768 bytes of disk space.
If you are short of disk space or have only a small portfolio, you can
enter a number less than 255. For example, 127 entries will require 16,384
bytes; 63 entries will require 8,192 bytes, and so on. The number you
enter will be rounded up to the nearest multiple of 16, minus 1, to make
the most efficient use of disk space. Thus, the maximum number of entries
will actually be 15, 31, 47, 63, ..., 239, or 255. Not all entries have
to be used.
Now the program will automatically start asking you for information about
the first security to be entered. If you want to see the Help screens
first, press the Esc key, then H.

B = Buy or sell shares. This function takes you to the Add/Delete Portfolio
Transactions screen which allows you to buy into, or sell out of, the ac-
tive portfolio. A security must exist in the catalog before it can be pur-
chased. This function is also used to process stock splits and fund dis-
tributions, and to set the Federal and State income tax rates for the ac-
tive portfolio for the income/tax analysis function, described later.
You should not use the portfolio(s) supplied with the program; they are in-
tended for demonstration purposes only. To start a new portfolio, make up
a name for it and then make it active with the C function (a physical file
doesn't have to exist to be made active). The C function is described later
in these screens. When the (B)uy function is invoked, you will be asked
"Are you starting a new portfolio (Y=Yes, N=No)?". Reply Y. If you press
N or Esc, you will be prompted to insert the correct data disk. Pressing
Esc again will get the Master Menu back.
Next, the program will ask what is the maximum number of entries you want.
Just press Enter for the default maximum of 255 entries. If you are opera-
ting from floppy disks or you are short of disk space, enter a smaller num-
mer. WARNING: Once entered, this number cannot be changed later on!
DESCRIPTION OF THE MASTER MENU SCREEN PAGE 5 OF 9
B = Buy (continued). A portfolio requires 64 bytes per entry, plus one extra
entry. (The closing of an open position does not add another entry).
The maximum size portfolio will require 16,384 bytes of disk space. If
you are short of disk space or have only a small portfolio, you can enter
a number less than 255. For example, 127 entries will require 8,192 bytes;
63 entries will require only 4,096 bytes. The number you enter will be
rounded up to the nearest multiple of 32, minus 1, to make the most effic-
ient use of disk space. Thus, the maximum number of entries will actually
be 31, 63, 95, 127, 159, 191, 223 or 255. Not all entries have to be used.
Now the program will automatically start asking you for information about
the first security purchase. If you want to see the Help screens first,
press the Esc key, then H. It is advisable to have a printout of the cata-
log handy so you can see what symbols (or other identifiers) are available.
A (P)rint function is available from the Add/Delete Stocks screen.
All portfolios must correspond to a single catalog file (CATALOG.POR) which
is on the same diskette or in the same sub-directory. You can have as many
portfolios as will fit on a diskette or in a sub-directory. Thus, when
adding a new portfolio you do NOT have to start a new catalog file.
DESCRIPTION OF THE MASTER MENU SCREEN PAGE 6 OF 9
C = Change active portfolios. This is where you specify the active portfolio
for update, and active portfolios to be combined for analysis and reports,
by typing in thier names. To start a new portfolio and make it active for
update, type in a name that doesn't already exist. The B function will
recognize this, and will act as described previously.
Up to four portfolios can be combined for any of the report functions. The
active portfolio for update may optionally be included. After entering the
name of the active portfolio for update, you can enter the names of the
portfolios which you want to include in the reporting and analysis func-
tions. The same portfolio(s) are always used in all of the report func-
tions, until you change them with the (C) function.
Separate portfolios can be used for different brokers, or for different
members of a family or for different clients. Thus, you can examine the
performance of individual portfolios under different managers, or combine
them to determine overall performance.
DESCRIPTION OF THE MASTER MENU SCREEN PAGE 7 OF 9
G = Gains and losses on sale report. This function reports realized gains and
losses (on security purchases you have sold) between two dates inclusively.
It provides data for income tax Schedule D. The holding periods are given
in months/days, and annual returns are computed, for each individual tax
lot. Totals can be broken down by security type. You can "browse" through
the data on the screen, or print it out.
I = Income and taxability analysis. This function reports cost basis, amount
held, expected income and yield. Purchases of like securities are com-
bined. You can "browse" through the data on the screen, or print it out.
Total income can be broken down by calendar month and quarter, or by secur-
ity type and taxability (Federal, State or non-taxable). Total cost basis
and yield can be broken down by security type. Yield may be calcucated
based on original cost or on current market value.
M = Market value analysis. This function shows cost, market value, unrealized
gain/loss, holding period and annualized return, for each individual tax
lot. (Current market values are entered in the Add/Delete Stocks screen).
Totals can be broken down by security type, industry category or portfolio.
You can "browse" through the data on the screen, or print it out.
DESCRIPTION OF THE MASTER MENU SCREEN PAGE 8 OF 9
S = Specify disk drive. This is where you specify the path name for data files.
A path name includes a drive letter such as B: and one or more sub-direc-
tory names such as \PA\. A sub-directory name can have 1 to 8 letters and
\or digits only. Some examples: B:\ selects the root directory on drive B.
C or C: selects the current sub-directory on drive C, and C:\PA\ selects
directory PA on drive C. You should enter the complete path name. Press
the Esc key to abort (no changes), or the Enter key by itself to specify
the default sub-directory on the default drive.
After you change the path, you should press C to enter the name(s) of the
current portfolio(s) as described previously. Changing the path auto-
matically deletes the portfolio names. You can invoke the Add/Delete
Securities function without an active portfolio, but you won't be able to
Buy or sell or do reports until you specify the active portfolio(s).
V = Video display function. This is where you select the color schemes for
display on the screen. The color schemes are shown graphically and you
select by number. The screen colors actually change when you return back
to the Master Menu.
DESCRIPTION OF THE MASTER MENU SCREEN PAGE 9 OF 9
H = Help screen display - shows the information you are reading now.
Q = Quit and return to DOS. To avoid loss of data, always terminate your ses-
sion with the QUIT function.
